Associate Minister Search

Darien, Connecticut

The First Congregational Church of Darien, United Church of Christ, seeks an engaging and energetic Associate Minister, comfortable in our open and liberal church setting. The Associate Minister will have a significant focus on ministry to youth and the young families of our growing church, as well as on preaching, pastoral care, and education for the entire congregation and outreach in the community. Approachability and passion for the Christian message are qualities essential to the position.

The Associate Minister will take the lead in developing an integrated vision for youth ministry, encompassing the youth group (including service outings and mission trips), confirmation program, and church school. Central to the role are skills at connecting with and mentoring youth, visibility at school and community events, and availability to youth. She or he will lead and teach the confirmation program and work with our church school director, parents, and lay leaders to organize events. The Associate Minister also will expand upon our ministries of adult education, teaching, and fellowship; assist the Senior Minister as liturgist with shared preaching duties (typically once a month); share in pastoral care; and help to reach out to new members.

We seek an Associate Minister who is confident, self-assured, and willing to work collaboratively and respectfully with an involved membership; a people person who is open-minded, compassionate, caring, creative, and well organized, with a positive attitude and a sense of humor. We seek ordained—or soon to be ordained—candidates who have a gift for youth work, diverse life experiences, and the ability to inspire and communicate.

We offer compensation (base salary and benefits) in line with UCC Connecticut Conference guidelines, as well as a parsonage (a new 3-bedroom townhouse apartment).

About our church and community

Founded in 1737, our historic church today has about 600 members and is growing. Average Sunday attendance is about 150; about 40% of members are below age 35, and about 92% are graduates of college or graduate programs. About 63% of couples in our congregation have children at home; we have a large number of students in church school, 20 youth were confirmed in our care this year, and average weekly participation in the youth group is about 15.

Our Senior Minister is Rev. Dale Rosenberger. Our staff includes a part-time Church School Director. We have an excellent music program. Our church has no debt, with the average pledge amounting to about $3,000 per year. With 10% of pledge revenue designated for outreach and substantial additional funding and in-kind support from various church activities, in 2014 we contributed over $84,000 to outreach.

Our church draws primarily from Darien (population about 21,000), a family-oriented community with outstanding programs for children and families and a strong spirit of community involvement and volunteerism.
