Church School

We offer a comprehensive Church School Program for children ages 2 through 7th grade.  We also have a nursery/toddler room available for the youngest members of our church family.  Childcare and Church School are offered at the 10:00 a.m. service.

Infants, Toddlers, and Preschool 2’s and 3’s

Children are welcomed in their classrooms beginning at 9:50 and remain in the classroom for the entire service.  Give yourselves time to check in with caregivers and teachers and settle your children.

3-year-olds through Grade 7

Students go to worship with their parents for the first part of the service.  On leaving the Meetinghouse following the Children’s Message, children ages 3-Pre-K meet their teachers in Parish Hall.  All other children meet their teachers in their classrooms unless instructed otherwise.

Church School Curriculum

This year we are using a Church School curriculum entitled, Gather Round, published by Brethren Press.  Gather ’Round is Bible story-centered, with an emphasis on helping kids and families become disciples of Jesus and strengthening the connection between church and home.

Importantly, this year for the first time, all of our classes will be team taught.

The Gather ’Round curriculum has adopted four major goals:

  1. To nurture children and youth in their faith formation by…helping them know, love, and follow God; engaging them in the language and habits of worship; respecting them as partners in ministry; and encouraging them to engage directly with scripture.
  1. To strengthen the connection between home and congregation by… offering parents and caregivers resources to participate in their children’s faith formation; and providing opportunities to engage the entire congregation in faith nurture.
  1. To explore what it means to follow in the footsteps of Jesus in Christian community by…considering how God is working in the world and how people are invited to participate in that work; learning how to share our faith with others; providing an alternative to worldviews that emphasize individualism, power, and accumulation of wealth; and encouraging an attitude of service.
  1. To be versatile and easy to use by…supporting congregational Christian education programs.

Church School Schedule

Church School is offered every Sunday from September to the first week in June.  Designated Sundays when attendance is typically lower are called Block Sundays.  During these times, children in grades 4-7 remain in church for the entire service.  Preschool children ages 3, 4, and 5 and in Kindergarten come together in one classroom, and grades 1-3 meet in another classroom.

Church School Student Registration Form

We ask that all students be registered each year for Sunday School.  This form is available in classrooms or can be downloaded and completed at home.  Importantly, the form includes a place for photo permissions.

Church School Teachers

Our Church School teachers are parents and other adults who volunteer from our congregation.  We encourage all generations of our congregation to be actively involved in Christian Education.  We also suggest that parents teach a minimum of one year per child during their Church School education.  Church School teachers add their warmth and care and have the joy of sharing their faith and becoming acquainted with the children of the church.  We also encourage our Confirmation students to volunteer in the classrooms.  Their fresh ideas and enthusiasm are welcome and appreciated!  Click on the link above to see a list of the teachers for the 2009-10 program year.

Children’s Fundraiser

Throughout the Church School year our children make weekly donations to the collection boxes in the classrooms.  Then they choose gifts to purchase and donate to the Church or the community at large.  We encourage all children to participate - it doesn’t have to be much - a quarter, nickel or dime from their allowance or from an extra chore done at home.  It all adds up to encouraging our children to help the Church and the world and to learn the importance of giving.
