Research has shown that preschoolers learn best through play and that hands-on experience is necessary before children are ready for symbols (letters, numbers). At First Congregational each classroom is organized into centers – science, woodworking, an easel, small manipulatives, dramatic play, block building and a story corner. The teacher(s) plans the curriculum knowing what she needs and wants to accomplish while keeping the teaching plan and environment flexible in order to account for and incorporate the children’s interests. We use the Connecticut Preschool Curriculum Framework as a guide in designing an adaptable and enriching program. This includes opportunities for personal, social, physical, cognitive and aesthetic development and creative expression.

PROGRAMS FOR 4-YEAR-OLDS
Our 4-year-olds attend school 5 mornings a week from 9:00am-11:45am. There are two classes with up to 18 children with two co-teachers as well as one class of up to 9 children with one teacher. The “floating” teachers on staff assist in the 4-year-old classes, if needed, but 4-year-olds, as a rule, operate more independently and need less assistance with daily routines and projects.
We have one Pre-K class that meets five mornings a week. Mondays and Fridays they meet 9:00am-11:45am, and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday classes are longer, from 9:00am-2:30pm.
Pre-K is often a good choice for children who are eligible for kindergarten but would benefit by having an extra year to grow developmentally, emotionally, and socially. Teachers within our 4’s program will help parents with identifying this need and transitioning children smoothly.
