The children participate in weekly special activities as part of their regular schedule. These Specials help enrich their learning experience in a fun way that the children all come to look forward to:
Spanish – Once a week the 3’s, 4’s and PreK students are introduced to learning a new language with Spanish class.
Messy Art – Every week the 3’s, 4’s, Pre-K, the Monday/Tuesday MT 2’s, and the WTh 2’s enjoy unbridled creativity with this special art class which culminates in an evening art show for families at the end of the school year.
Movement –The kids let loose and are encouraged to move in fun and unique ways in this special Movement class which meets once a month for the 3’s, 4’s, and Pre-K.
Junior Naturalist –Once a week for 12 weeks for 3’s, 4’s, and Pre-K, the Darien Nature Center comes into the classes and teaches the kids about the wonders of animals and the outdoors.
Music – Once a month, Beautiful Marcia brings the joy of music to our 3’s, 4’s, and Pre-K children.
Our 3’s Program participates in one organized field trip in the spring. We enjoy a morning at the Stamford Nature Center to extend upon our lessons on farms and farm animals.
Our 4’s Program benefits from one organized field trip and one in-school enrichment experience. In October, they visit Eden Farms where the children pick pumpkins, find their way through a maze, enjoy a hayride, visit a haunted house, and watch the farm animals. In the spring, as part of their study of the seashore, Creatures in the Classroom visits, bringing examples of local ocean inhabitants (horseshoe crabs, oysters, clams) for the children to touch and study.
For Pre-K, the field trips are closely linked to what is being studied. In the fall, they take a walking tour of Sellecks Woods where a local wildlife expert shares observations of the fauna and flora of this ecologically diverse environment. At Thanksgiving, the children take advantage of the school’s close proximity to the Bates-Scofield House to learn about the daily lives of colonists in Darien. When studying outer space, the class visits the Discovery Museum’s planetarium. In May, the class visits Cove Island Park in Stamford for a SoundKids Explorer program involving live animals, sandy beach habitat exploration and a guided study of their aquarium.
