A
few thoughts from Dr. Don...
Today's letter comes to you with a variety
of feelings behind it. One is joy as
my fiancé will be in town this weekend.
Following whatever festivities are planned
after church we will be driving to Chicago.
We are planning to be married by my son the
other reverend on the plains of Kansas on
the 29th. Hope to see you Sunday.
The sad feelings I carry come from the
sickening debacle off the coast of
Louisiana. Untold millions of gallons
of oil are pouring into the Gulf of Mexico
in what could well turn out to be humanity's
greatest ecological catastrophe. I
think of the oceans of our earth as the womb
of creation and I wonder what will happen to
our species if we do not very soon learn to
live in harmony with nature.
While I have no expertise that lends itself
to solving the current problems, I do have
some thoughts on the longer term issues.
Human beings have, in my opinion, lost their
sense of the sacred. In particular we
have lost the sense of creation as sacred,
consequently, nature has become a great
grocery store exploited at every turn to
satisfy the seemingly insatiable human
desire for "you name it."
The problem is that the shelves are bare and
we are now eating the "seed corn."
Seed corn is that which is saved back to
plant next year's crop. We persist in
believing that somehow technology will save
us in the end. I am not so sure.
When you think of technology consider the
possibility of unintended consequences.
Sunday I will be preaching a sermon
entitled, "Touching Earth and Finding
God." The sermon is not, I
promise you, doomsday. The key to a
better relationship with nature is for us
human beings to regain an authentic sense of
the sacred. Perhaps we can begin this
process on Sunday.
Peace & Grace,
Don
