Giving is a life-changing spiritual discipline.
It’s life-changing because, when we give, we step outside of a cycle that many of us know all too well: the more we spend, the more we want, and the more we want, the more we spend. It’s different with giving. It’s freeing. The more we give, the less we want, and the less we want, the more we give. That’s the easiest way to grow to become more contented, joy-filled, and grateful human beings.
It’s spiritual because, when we give, we build up the best parts of ourselves: our sense of loyalty and of integrity, our feelings of gratitude and devotion and compassion. That’s spiritual stuff. Stuff that, as Jesus once observed, “moths can never eat through, nor rust destroy, nor thieves steal.”
And it’s a discipline because, like playing tennis or the piano, being a generous person takes practice. It doesn’t just happen. Generosity can be a way of life.
