A Note About Today’s Lesson
Dear Parents,
Thank you for joining me for today’s Church School Lesson. Please note that today’s lesson is about the Creation Story.
I believe strongly that the children of the church should be brought up in faith compatible with current scientific and archaeological discovery so that they don’t enter their teen years and adulthood afraid of scientific discovery and inquiry…and by consequence adverse to a faith that made them fear science. Therefore, I teach the Creation Story through eyes of wonder; asking the following questions:
Amid the many written creation myths that have been discovered, why did THIS ONE end up in our Bibles?
What can we learn from it?
What does it mean for us today?
I have chosen to teach this story in our DIY lesson so that you as the parent can adjust the lesson to fit your personal comfort level. If you would like to talk further about this or would like to present the Bible’s Creation Story to your child in a different way, please feel free to do so! Know that I am willing to assist you in any way that you need. Thank you for introducing your child to the world of faith- sometimes complicated, but always beautiful!

In church we do something special called “Passing the Peace”. Let’s do it together now. Turn to the people who are around you and say,
“The Peace of Christ Be With You.”
They respond, “And Also With You!”

Say it together!
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread And forgive us our debts
As we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil
For thine is the Kingdom, and the Power and the Glory forever. Amen.

Faith is hoping for something or believing in something, even when you can’t see it. We can’t see the wind, but we can see what it does to trees! We can’t see the air, but we breathe it every day! We have faith that the sun will rise every morning. We have faith that our parents and teachers will take care of us and show us how to do hard stuff. We have faith that God loves us.
-what do you have faith in?
-what do you wish you had more faith in?
-how do you think faith can grow?[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_zigzag color=”chino”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1591481957064{background-color: #f2d2f1 !important;}”][vc_column_inner css=”.vc_custom_1599326945183{background-color: #d6d6ff !important;}”][vc_empty_space][vc_custom_heading text=”God Sightings” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:center|color:%230a2adb” google_fonts=”font_family:Aldrich%3Aregular|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”10344″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]
If you are comfortable, light a real candle and pass it carefully around from child to child as they share their God Sightings.
[SAY]: It’s time for God Sightings!
- Think of a God Sighting that you enjoyed this summer.
- Think of a God Sighting that was given to you as a gift.
- Think of a God Sighting about your family.
The candle represents the fact that GOD lights up the world with these special gifts: our God Sightings.
Prayer: Dear God, you give good gifts because you love us. Thank you for God Sightings. Sometimes it’s hard to find them because it’s easy to focus on hard times. But we can still find God Sightings, even in those hard times. Help me to look for them. Amen.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_zigzag color=”chino”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1599328821552{background-color: #a8edea !important;}”][vc_column_inner css=”.vc_custom_1599331487437{background-color: #b8f7a3 !important;}”][vc_empty_space][vc_custom_heading text=”Song of the Month: in Sign Language!” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:center|color:%230a2adb” google_fonts=”font_family:Aldrich%3Aregular|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]In church school this year we will learn a new hymn every month. Today’s story is called a “creation story”. A Creation Story is a story about why things are the way that they are in the world.
Many different nations from all across the world tell different Creation Stories. Some have talking animals, some have many different gods or deities, and some have just one. There are hundreds of different creation stories all around the world, each one a little bit different!
Why is this? Probably because nobody was there to see it happen, and so nobody could write it down!
A Creation Story helped ancient peoples to answer hard questions. Thousands of years ago when the ancient peoples wrote down Creation Stories, they didn’t have the same science and technology that we have. They didn’t have telescopes, x-rays, microscopes, satellites, or spaceships! They had to think of other ways that the world might have started. They were looking for answers to questions like this:
“Why is there water and land and sky?”
“What are humans made out of?”
“Why are there animals?”
“Where did the stars come from?”
We are Christians at our church, which means that we follow Jesus’ loving ways. We learn about Jesus’ ways from people who knew Jesus and wrote down the stories about him. These stories are in the Bible, which is a collection of stories about laws, histories, myths and legends, letters, lists, songs, and poems. Guess what else our bible has!?
A Creation Story!
As Christians, we believe that God made everything, and that God is still making everything work together for good purposes. The people that wrote the Creation Story in the Bible believed that same thing!

Post-Story Discussion
Before doing this discussion, make sure you read the story introduction!
Why do you think there is a Creation Story in the Bible?
Why do you think there are different Creation Stories all around the world?
What do you think we can learn about ourselves from the Bible’s Creation Story?
What can we learn about God from the Bible’s Creation Story?[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_zigzag color=”peacoc”][vc_custom_heading text=”Children’s Bulletins for this week” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:center|color:%230a2adb” google_fonts=”font_family:Aldrich%3Aregular|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][vc_zigzag color=”peacoc”][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]
