A Message from Mrs. G.
[/vc_message][vc_column_text]
Hello, Church Family. I am on day 22 of self isolation and I must admit, I have been feeling a sadness over the past few days that I didn’t feel at the beginning. News reports continue to roll in, friends and family are exposed and becoming sick, treasured acquaintances are losing their jobs, others are struggling to pay their rent and keep their businesses afloat, and the risks and rules change and shift.
~~~~~
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8
~~~~~
Take in the heartbreaking stories. Weep for your friends and family.
~~~~~
“Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.” Matthew 5:4
But find the people who are putting out positive content and tune in to them. It’s those people who will keep you sane and remind you that it’s possible to feel another way. Block out fearful and political rants and tune in to prayers, poetry, and beauty.
I love all of you so much and think of you daily! Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist your family.
<>< Mrs. G.
ART THERAPY ACTIVITY
[/vc_message][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]
Words to Live By Collage
Teens and children can be vulnerable to harsh, judgmental environments where they don’t feel they can be themselves. Although our environments have shifted and closed in for the time being, there are still places, times, and circumstances within isolation that could be hindering your child. It’s essential to identify their core values and identify who they think they are.
It’s crucial to create coping strategies that they can come back over to time and let them know that their ideas, feelings, and values will change with experience.
The ‘Words to Live By’ activity helps to visualize their core values through creative collage. Here’s how to teach this activity:
You will need:
- Old magazines, newspapers, picture books, and scrap paper
- Colored pens and pencils
- Scissors and glue
- Cardboard or thick paper for the base of the collage
- This activity can be carried out with a group or one-to-one
Begin by:
- Asking participants to take a moment to reflect on their core values. For younger participants, you may want to discuss what we mean by values by asking them what some of the things they feel strongly about are. Or what they feel good about when they see how other people behave and how they behave.
- Once participants have a good idea of their values, invite them to take a mindful minute. Start by asking them to close their eyes and turn their focus to their breath. Now ask them to let the words associated with their values freely flow into their thoughts. What are these words? What are the related images or colors and shapes they feel connected to these words?
- Once participants feel ready, invite them to begin selecting images, words, phrases, or colors from the magazines and newspapers. They will use these to compile a collage that they feel reflects their words to live by. This can be image-based, or entirely abstract; it’s all about how their words make them feel.
- If they feel comfortable, save some time at the end of the session for them to present their collages and share with the group what they have created and what it means to them.
