Learning to Give & Receive God’s Love
At The First Congregational Church, we welcome children of all ages and developmental stages to learn with us as we explore faith. We offer a comprehensive Church School program for children ages three through fifth grade each Sunday from September through mid-June. Currently, we are using the SHINE! “Living as God’s People” curriculum. This is an innovative Bible-centered program that gives the children further insight into scripture and how God is active at this stage in their lives. We integrate hands-on activities, science, games, and short videos to provide a stimulating learning environment.
On Holidays or and special Sundays, children enjoy Church School as a combined group. However, on most Sundays, children are broken into classrooms by age: threes – second grade and third – fifth grade. Often, our Teleios members (Grades 6-12) are invited to assist the children in Church School as well.
All of our classrooms have at least two teachers in each room, as we employ a team teaching model to provide for a safe church environment.
Church School is offered every Sunday from September to mid-June, with a more informal program during the summer.
Special Programs
Third Grade Communion: In the winter of 3rd grade, students and parents are invited to attend two special classes designed to introduce and educate children about the tradition of communion. Upon completion, our third graders experience communion for the first time with their families.
Fourth Grade Bibles: In late October of each year, the First Congregational Church of Darien presents a special bible to every fourth grade student enrolled in Church School. These special keepsakes are used in class through Confirmation.
Junior Choir: Children in first – sixth grades (younger if they can read) and enjoy singing are welcome to join Junior Choir. Rehearsals are held one to two times per month, and performances happen in the spring. Regular attendance is encouraged, but is not mandatory, so don’t let this stop you.
Teaching Team
Our Church School teaching team is made up of parents, teens, and other adults from our congregation who have a call to serve children. We encourage all generations of our congregation to be actively involved in Christian Education. Potential teachers must go through the Teacher Training with the Director of C.E., after which they can sign up to teach at least one Sunday a month. We suggest that parents teach a minimum of one year per child during their Church School education. Church School teachers are mentors, friends, and faith-models for the children of the church.
